so last year i went and binge watched the entirety of MLP:FiM (except for equestria girls because it's not important) since i dropped off of the fandom around the time season 4 was brand new. gotta say, watching it in a vacuum was the way to go. i became absolutely obssesed! i really enjoyed it, though it wasn't the most perfect thing in the world especially in later seasons. it definately felt like it should've ended forever ago but i did like the inclusion of more intelligent races thanks to the movie. i really didn't like the movie by the way but i soldiered through it!
while i didn't really care for them taking fan stuff and making it canon, i did really think it was ballsy and very cool of them to make the openly gay fan-pairing of the background characters lyra and bon bon canon and get married.

them going as far as to keep referencing the iconic lyra sitting pose that fans really liked was neat too, sometimes having lyra sitting or doing things in ways that feel more human than pony.
it was very interesting to watch because this show started airing when people were only beginning to be more aware of the LGBTQ+ movement since more people were beginning to use the internet around this time, and once that increased, shows like this could get away with sliding fruity stuff in their media. or even in the case of something like steven universe, make that part of the show's identity. with MLP:FIM i don't think that's the case, but it's still nice of the staff to sprinkle in a little bit of that.
there was also scootaloo's 2 gay aunts years before this, something that made headlines online.

i think it's real cool they showcased an older, possibly middle-aged, lesbian couple. there is this tendency i see in media to only portray lesbians as younger people, sometimes even children, possibly due to the fact that it tends to be more marketable towards more demographics other than lesbians, as unfortunate as that is to accept. not that there is anything wrong with any gay kind of couple being portrayed, but i definately feel like it's some corporate move to not do anything that won't sell, especially when it comes to anything involving women.
also!
i've binge watched all of the g1 mlp show and movie more recently as of this year (the 80s one, not the one that aired in the 90s) at first i was a bit off put by the artstyle and clear lack of budget and animation corner-cutting but i stuck with it. i have to say, i feel i like G1 MLP way more than G4 (MLP:FiM)! while G4 took itself more seriously in wanting to craft an engaging and more well thought out setting with loads of lore, i can't help but feel like i enjoy the looseness of the G1 mlp show. it's not as structured as G4 but i definately think there are more possibilities for anything to happen in G1 than in G4. for instance, there weren't just people hanging out with ponies in G4! it looks pretty goofy seeing the strangly proportioned cartoon ponies hanging out with regular humans but i kinda liked the goofiness of G1 mlp. i can totally see why such a thing wouldn't fly in G4 mlp.

i also think that since the original run of G1 was 2 seasons and a movie, it definately didn't feel as if it overstayed its welcome unlike how watching all 9 seasons, several specials, and the movie of G4 started to feel at points. less is more!
oh and G1 mlp definately had its fair share of pretty gay stuff too. while it was never explicitly stated because it's from the 80s, there were a lot of implications one could interpret as kinda fruity.

there was a scene in the original MLP g1 pilot where applejack licks glory on the cheek, which was curiously cut out of all future releases of the pilot. back then, the ponies acted a lot more like real ponies despite having human intelligence (and even dexterity in some cases) so occasionally you would see them doing stuff like nuzzling each other with their heads muzzles and using their mouths to carry stuff. i really wonder if maybe later the people incharge of the show thought it might be misconstrued as gay behavior and didn't want to chance getting complaints from parents. either way, people online kept the reciepts so it is insanely easy to find this cut content online.
another instance of this is in the actual show with two unicorns, fizzy and gusty, where it definately looks like gusty is giving fizzy a congratulatory smooch.
pretty sure this also got cut but you can still find it just as easily online.

i guess i can say that i'm a pretty big fan of G1 mlp now! probably more than G4 really. i like this light fantasy, magical girl-esque fantasy world of talking creatures frolicking or doing day-to-day mundane stuff but also getting into all sorts of mishaps and adventures together.
one thing i don't see many people talking about is how even in the original MLP there is tons of action and adventure and occasionally downright depressing or even unnerving situations despite being a show targeted towards young girls. it's not all tea parties and glitter and dress-up like you might expect. big respect!
