it's been a while since i really read any sort of printed media and stuck to it, ever since i read all of deltora quest as a teenager. recently, i took a liking to high fantasy RPG settings and consumed a shitton of final fantasy in the past couple years. FF5 is now one of my favorite games ever thanks to the pixel remasters. even started playing FFXIV and have continued to play up until now. i wonder if it's because of my participation in pixiv fantasia, but i've been dying for more high fantasy settings. the only issue is a lot of stories with that setting tend to be either kinda lazy, not very well-thought out, or just boring. anime and manga is one of those types of media where this was becoming a big problem, at least for me. it's been a major bummer until i started reading dungeon meshi.
basically, dungeon meshi fuckin rules.

the basic summary of the plot is a bunch of adventurers explore a dungeon to find one of the main characters', laios's, sister who was eaten by a dragon. resurrection is definitely a thing in this universe but only within the dungeon's walls and only under certain circumstances. and so, they stick to the dungeon, never leaving, and being forced to survive off what ever crosses their path. most of them are real apprehensive about the idea of eating monsters, but laios has an insane but childlike glee at the idea to learn more about monsters, being already obsessed with monsters to an abnormal degree. the party are pretty much forced to go along with whatever the hell he gets them into.
of course there is more to the plot and setting but i really really urge people who love TTRPGs to give dungeon meshi a read. it's pretty much the only manga i've completely finished in a long long time, due in part to how much depth there is to not only the story and setting but the art and character design as well.

so much effort goes into even minor characters! look how easy they all are to tell apart!
also it probably is obvious but the author, ryoko kui, is very influenced by western-made RPGs. in particular, she seems to be a big fan of the balder's gate series. the influence is insanely easy to see when you look at her characters and, in a landscape where anime and manga tends to have 'a look', it's soooo refreshing to see stuff like this instead of what you would typically see. i was honestly shocked to learn something like this got an anime adaptation. i haven't watched it and i really don't have any interest in watching it but i'm sure it's fine.
i'll just stick to obsessing over the manga instead. even now that i've read the final chapter. i thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish, but the sad thing is, i really don't think i'll be reading any manga in the foreseeable future. dungeon meshi really spoiled me!
instead, i want to aspire to make things that are at least even half as refreshing as dungeon meshi. thank you so much for giving us such a wonderful manga, kui-sensei!
